The cricket world last month brought out all the superlatives to describe the heroic innings played by an injured South Africa captain, Graeme Smith in the third Test against Australia in Sydney.

However, an equally courageous innings was played by South Africa’s wicketkeeper-batsman, the Warriors’ Mark Boucher, who batted for 45 minutes in the third ODI against Australia in Sydney with a broken toe after being hit by a Shaun Tait thunderbolt when on nine 12 days ago. Coming to the office this morning, I was surprised to hear news that Maritzburg United midfielder Lucky Maselesele had tested positive for cocaine following a random test he undertook after the team’s game against Wits University back in November. This incident brought me back to an article I came across last week on the international newswire.
Four-time Premier Soccer League (PSL) championship winning, and current United coach Gordon Igesund was also surprised at the development saying the player had always been a model professional, but also hinted at the fact that it’s a phenomenon that exists in sport.
“I think drugs in sport are a worldwide problem because the players are earning so much money and are in the spotlight and don’t get managed properly,” said Igesund on soccer website kickoff.com. Read the rest of this entry »
