Thief impaled on museum fence (pics)

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by cheri on 04-09-2008

Thief impaled after foiled theftAn alleged thief had to be rushed to a local East London hospital on Wednesday night after being impaled while attempting to run away from a crime scene.

Senior admin officer at the museum, Rod Botha, said the suspect broke down the back door to the museum. The alarm went off and the man apparently got a fright and ran away.

Thief impaled after foiled theftHe climbed a tree and then attempted to jump over the fence. The suspect, however, lost his footing and was impaled by one of the spikes on the fence.

Botha said the man was discovered by a tow truck driver who heard his cries. Police and a local security company were despatched to the scene.

The man was taken to Frere Hospital and it is understood that he is due to undergo surgery.

What poetic justice. Pity the taxpayer will be paying for his surgery.

My first impression when I saw the article was, ha ha ha LOL. But reading it, you can’t help feeling sorry for the guy, he must be in soooooooooo much pain. He’ll never think about stealing again!!!!

Hehehehe, I’m sorry, but this is just so funny.
Imagine trying to explain this one away! “But, You Honour, I was just innocently walking by when an alarm suddenly went off and the fence got such a fright it jumped right up my jack!”
I know, I know, I should feel sorry for him but I am laughing too much. I will try to repent.

Sorry, still laughing too hard. Will have to repent later. Any lessons to be learnt from this?

Poor guy, maybe he was not stealing anything. He should be presumed innocent until proven otherwise. And, don’t link this with your prejudices on the function of the SAPS. You seem too hung up on the past.

Sean on 4 September, 2008 at 4:52 pm CPMSAST #

Well after that he doesn’t have to worry about what the other inmates might do to him in prison

tinkie on 4 September, 2008 at 5:15 pm CPMSAST #

Oh, come on, Nqakula, lighten up a bit.
However, maybe you could be right, maybe he was not intending to steal anything. I think the truth here is that Frere Hospital, as usual, didn’t have the right equipment so sent him for a ‘do it yourself’ prostate examination!
What the heck do you think he was doing there? Going gay with a pole? He is just sooooo lucky he fell at that angle and is still alive!

Dumi on 4 September, 2008 at 5:16 pm CPMSAST #

The poor fool, shame, I myself can’t help feeling sorry for him but I know that criminals never learn. We mustn’t think that a criminal would let a little thing like being impaled to an iron fence get in his way! Rest assured, once he’s healed, he’ll be back at it…

Now, I wonder if he can go to the toilet….

Bom on 4 September, 2008 at 5:19 pm CPMSAST #

Oh shame poor thing. Didn’t he realise that the area was fenced.
I wish all those who trespass could get the same treatment.

If you are innocent, there would be nor reason to run.

I am not judging him, but you have to question to the reason why he ended up with a sharp object so near his brain!

Hey Nqakula, he didn’t think of the past but he is feeling the present!, he wasn’t in a locked up and cordoned off area without a good reason. Perhaps you could suggest what he was doing there?

iamgoatman on 4 September, 2008 at 5:45 pm CPMSAST #

@An observer: On second thoughts nqakula is right. Perhaps he’s not a criminal, but just a colossal pervert who enjoys the feeling of a few feet of cold steel in him :p

Tsho Tsho Vile boetie. I have heard of been caught red handed, but this guy was red assed in the 2nd picture.

All I can say is Good You Deserve It & so do all the many many other crimainal in East London, making it a very bad place to live- locked up in your home, behind countless burgler bars, security gates, guard dogs and a fat insurance bill (not enough guns thanks to our so called safety and security minister Charles Nqakula, keeping the criminals safe)

Really not a good place to jump out of a tree, with that spiked fence on one side and the electric fence on the other.

Mickey,

Get a life or at least rather consider the reality of living in the Eastern Cape. I have been the victim of crime, not once but over seven times over the last three years.

I have hepatitis from being stabbed by twelve year-olds, I have had kidney stones dislodged from having a gang of 12 year-olds kicking me in the crutch and kidneys for no good reason other than they could. No sympathy there I’m afraid. They thought that it was funny enough to laugh at me whilst they where leaving boot marks over my body. I am sure you think that was just good clean fun?

The items they stole from me, cannot be replaced. The items my family gave to me and taken by force where never recovered.

I have lost thousands of rands worth of goods, had personal property illegally removed, property that is irreplaceable mind! The thieves never considered my family or even the impact of their act on my family’s life.

Of course I would never wish this painful experience on anyone but realistically he did it to himself without any help from anyone else.

When you have R30 000 worth of equipment stolen in one go and you find out the thief was paid a couple of hundred rand … sympathy is hard to manufacture and in fact, completely misplaced given the huge levels of crime in our suburbs.

Every time my family or I have been a victim of crime, the police couldn’t help or capture the perps. My car has been damaged, my home compromised, my daughter’s life put at risk. And what, you want sympathy when the criminals have more rights than you and I?

Feel for the idiot fence sitting… why? at no point has this government taken the crime issue seriously, at no point has local govt. improved the lives of the poorest of the poor, consider the rate payers and tax payers or the safety of society at large.

Feel for the ‘presumed innocent’ bystander on the fence…?
Ask yourself why was he there? I did and could up with no good reason! A possibility that did come to mind, was there copper in the near vicinity? I have had replace all my copper pipes, taps etc… with plastic ones.

Wherever you look, you see the ruling party govt.’s failures and the average East Londoner has been forced to stick his/her hand into their pockets to protect their property. What has happened here is … justice!

I would sleep better with blood thirsty dogs trained to kill in my property, the idiots jumping over my fence can then be faced with an option that I am happy with.

Hey Micky if you think out attitude stinks read the follow letter from Ireland gauranteed to put you in a froth.

Africa is giving nothing to anyone — apart from AIDS
Irish Independent Newspaper — Thursday July 10 2008 – Kevin Myers

No – it will not do. Even as we see African states refusing to take action to restore something resembling civilisation in Zimbabwe, the begging bowl for Ethiopia is being passed around to us, yet again. It is nearly 25 years since Ethiopia’s (and Bob Geldof’s) famous ‘Feed The World’ campaign, and in that time Ethiopia’s population has grown from 33.5 million to 78 million today.

So why on earth should I do anything to encourage further catastrophic demographic growth in that country? Where is the logic? There is none. To be sure, there are two things saying that logic doesn’t count. One is my conscience, and the other is the picture, yet again, of another wide-eyed child, yet again, gazing, yet again, at the camera, which yet again, captures the tragedy of . . .

Sorry. My conscience has toured this territory, both on foot and financially. Unlike most of you, I have been to Ethiopia; like most of you, I have stumped up the loot to charities to stop starvation there. The wide-eyed boy-child we saved, 20 years or so ago, is now a priapic, Kalashnikov-bearing hearty, siring children whenever the whim takes him.

There is, no doubt a good argument why we should prolong this predatory and dysfunctional economic, social and sexual system; but I do not know what it is. There is, on the other hand, every reason not to write a column like this.

It will win no friends, and will provoke the self-righteous wrath of, well, the self-righteous, letter-writing wrathful, a species which never fails to contaminate almost every debate in Irish life with its sneers and its moral superiority. It will also probably enrage some of the finest men in Irish life, like John O’Shea, of Goal; and the Finucane brothers, men whom I admire enormously. So be it.

But, please, – you self-righteously wrathful, spare me mention of our own Famine, with this or that lazy analogy. There is no comparison. Within 20 years of the Famine, the Irish population was down by 30pc. Over the equivalent period, thanks to western food, the Mercedes 10-wheel truck and the Lockheed Hercules, Ethiopia’s has more than doubled.

Alas, that wretched country is not alone in its madness. Somewhere, over the rainbow, lies Somalia, another fine land of violent, Kalashnikov-toting, khat-chewing, girl-circumcising, permanently tumescent layabouts.

Indeed, we now have almost an entire continent of sexually hyperactive indigents, with tens of millions of people who only survive because of help from the outside world.

This dependency has not stimulated political prudence or commonsense. Indeed, voodoo idiocy seems to be in the ascendant, with the next president of South Africa being a firm believer in the efficacy of a little tap water on the post-coital penis as a sure preventative against infection. Needless to say, poverty, hunger and societal meltdown have not prevented idiotic wars involving Tigre, Uganda, Congo, Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea, etcetera.

Broad brush-strokes, to be sure. But broad brush-strokes are often the way that history paints its gaudier, if more decisive, chapters. Japan, China, Russia, Korea, Poland, Germany, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia in the 20th century have endured worse broad brush-strokes than almost any part of Africa. They are now — one way or another — virtually all giving aid to or investing in Africa, whereas Africa, with its vast savannahs and its lush pastures, is giving almost nothing to anyone, apart from AIDS.

Meanwhile, Africa’s peoples are outstripping their resources, and causing catastrophic ecological degradation. By 2050, the population of Ethiopia will be 177 million: The equivalent of France, Germany and Benelux today, but located on the parched and increasingly protein-free wastelands of the Great Rift Valley.

So, how much sense does it make for us to actively increase the adult population of what is already a vastly over-populated, environmentally devastated and economically dependent country?

How much morality is there in saving an Ethiopian child from starvation today, for it to survive to a life of brutal circumcision, poverty, hunger, violence and sexual abuse, resulting in another half-dozen such wide-eyed children, with comparably jolly little lives ahead of them? Of course, it might make you feel better, which is a prime reason for so much charity. But that is not good enough.

For self-serving generosity has been one of the curses of Africa. It has sustained political systems which would otherwise have collapsed.

It prolonged the Eritrean-Ethiopian war by nearly a decade. It is inspiring Bill Gates’ programme to rid the continent of malaria, when, in the almost complete absence of personal self-discipline, that disease is one of the most efficacious forms of population-control now operating. If his programme is successful, tens of millions of children who would otherwise have died in infancy will survive to adulthood, he boasts. Oh good: then what?

I know. Let them all come here.

Hey Mickey

I will be sleeping better tonight, knowing that at least one of the too many dispicable criminals is off our streets and will not only end up in prison for a short while probably, but has ended up making himself suffer greatly with his self inflicted wounds, which will be with him forever.

No-one should empathise with criminals. There is no excuse for stealing and killing. Are you the one person out of -46 Million in SA that has not been a victim of crime?

Personally we have had 3 cars stolen from outside our house, 1 broken into, 3 thefts in our house, 1 attempted theft in our garage with a smashed car window and I have had 3 guys corner me with knives (lucky for my long-sleeved shirt that got pulled off while they grabbed me and I was able to get away and retrieve the shirt afterwards).

Plus myself and all people around here have to live in fear all the time and be locked up in their homes, with burglar bars, high walls all around, big security gates, electric garage doors which are more secure, alarms with armed response and a high insurance bill that increases all the time to pay and when you make a claim they cheat you by not paying out, demanding proof of purchase for everything, saying that your cover is too low because their assessor claims that your posessions worth R30000 are worth R300000 and therefore you will only get 10% back or they pay you with vouchers for shops that rip you off.

Human decency = to be a decent civilised person that does not steal from and kill others.

One less criminal on our streets is a victory for decent people. Too bad he survived!!!!!!!!!

Hi, DDOnline Editor,

I can now report that Ice water problem is being attended to.

The problem was identified, a meeting was held with the community, and a commitment was made by all the stake-holders that the problem WILL be sorted out before the end of this month. I have also contacted Ice personally to relay the news to her.

Jan,

Thanks for your blog on your water issue. It is reports like these that make it clear to us that there are much to be done in this country in order to correct the imbalances of the past. I will keep you posted and suggest that when the problem is solved, we will invite you to visit the project some time soon.

Sorry for butting in on a fencing job, but is has now been established why SA are not doing well in fencing – fear of the (of)fence. Let keep our (of)fence on criminality in SA

I don’t think it’s judgement. I think we are all just so sick and tired of other people taking what doesn’t belong to them, that if justice is served to one out of the thousands that commit injustices on a daily basis, we all find a bit of comfort in that…

We were in the house at the time. They then proceded to try and brake in another 4 times in 2 days. My husband and myself spent a fortune on upgrading our security system, we even got a armed guard on the premises for one night so we could sleep. It was a nightmare.

Although this guy ws badly hurt, he got what he deserves. What was he doing where he ws not suppoase to be.

Talk about a perverse puppet!

Like Jeff Dunham’s Jose (jalapeno on a steek), we have a tsotsi “on a steek”. ROTFLMAO!!! :D

Whilst just imagining the guys pain (literally, being ripped a new one) makes me cringe every time, whether or not it comes down to guilt or innocence (though let’s be honest, anyone with half a brain and logic above goldfish level can deduce the right of it), deserved or not, the simple core fact of the matter is that he is reaping the consequences of his actions.

Hopefully, he will heal up properly, then face the law to sort things out. Glad nothing was really broken or stolen.

I do feel sorry for the guy must hurt but some one had to try it first and see if it works

Could I make a copy of the photo and make a BEWARE OF THE FENCE sign. Have the same type of fence surrounding my home in Gonubie and with crime taking over our small community ….perhaps this would prevent any further damages to my family…

Lets be honest here guys…if your choice of life is crime the you have to pay for it.Cant think of a better way than pain.Memories work with emotions and pictures.Trust me he will think twice before jumping a fence and breaking the law again.

People feel sorry for him but they seem to forget about the crime in East London the past month…Shooting point blank, attempted rape and assault, killed for a cellphone, stabbed by youngster etc etc….these are the type of maniacs that deserves it.Prison just does not do it anymore,u have more rights as a criminal.

They must pay and what better way than pain!!!!!

Giving up now on the level of bloggers insensitivity on this site.Has anyone heard the biblical ‘He who has no sin must cast the first stone’.The guy has not even been to court yet but people are having a field day without even establishing the real reason for finding himself on the fence. What about gale force winds blowing across EL over the past few days – Could he not have been blown from the tree nearby and fell there? The show some bit of mercy folks.

These comments are all ASS-enine.

Darren Reed on 5 September, 2008 at 3:50 pm CPMSAST #

Seriously Jack, that is the weakest and most pathetic reasoning ever.

Well, we may be casting stones, but we can get forgiven under God’s grace – so there. Casting biblical principles about to try back up non-existent reasoning. Hmpf.

Rather, this person’s come-uppance (lol) and himself is a representation of what the general public’s reaction is to crime and criminals who have the country by a stranglehold. While he may have not committed a serious crime, he was still attempting burglary, and trespassing (even if blown out of a tree).

Like it has been said many times before, action and reaction – you want to climb over spikey fences and get blown off-balance or slip (action), you get an enema supreme (reaction).

If you (generalization) want to moan about people’s “insensitive” views, then cast that at the foot of a society that is living in fear and jaded from numerous cases of murder, rape, and other major crimes (not to mention burning people alive), that affect many citizens, sometimes regrettably on a daily basis.

Seriously, blown out of a tree….I’m going to chuckle in despair over what motivated that.

Pain and suffering is never a nice thing, and under a perfect world (i.e God’s world) this wouldn’t have even happened (this specific circumstance at least). But this is not Utopia, is in an imperfect world, filled with criminals and gale force winds. :)

Darren Reed – good point. No matter if we forgive and do not judge — people must still be accountable for their reactions. If some woman knowingly sleeps around, without protection or anything – she puts herself at tisk for STDs and pregnancy – so if she winds up in that situation, must we say “ag shame”?

To the bleeding heart liberals, he was there for no good reason.

Gale force winds, what an asinine comment, you want to excuse his mindless behaviour because he came to a sticky end? (LOL) – get a life. I suppose you would congratulate his good fortune if he managed to get away unscathed?

Criminals have more rights than the people they rob, rape, pillage, destroy, shoot, kill, trample on, kick, hurt, injure and they willingly ignore the human rights of there victims, and for this we must show them sympathy … why?

There is an interesting take on the African paradigm by someone in Ireland further up on the bloggs, who from the tone of his letter is tired of the African begging bowl mentality.

Why was he there at that time of night? Well- to steal, rob or deprive someone of something that was not his in the first place.

No law-abiding individual would do what he did, no tax paying, (bled-dry by ANC ruling party tax system that allows gross manipulation and mismanagement, thieving and corruption) would willingly put him on the sharp end of a fence that is.

This idiot should be allowed to stay up there as a warning to the other affirmative shoppers out there, but they feel so little for life that they would probably just steal his takkies and check his socks for money,

From reading these bloggs I can determine that people have reached a point – equal to the savagery of the perpetrators.

As unfortunate as this now seems, I would not be surprised if when a thief enters a home not of his own, and is injured or shot by the homeowner, the said homeowner, wallops or stuns the criminal/s, then wraps the thief/thieves in a garbage bag (hmmm poetic justice maybe) and drops the bleeding and justly injured criminal in the bush where stray dogs could feed off him.

The said homeowner could then go back home, shower, jump back into bed and carry on with their life. No!! – If the bleeding heart liberals could wait before jumping down my throat…. Ask yourself this, you might, now be no better than the criminal, that entered your home uninvited or are you?

You have protected what is yours with whatever was at your disposal; you have ridded society of another thief/criminal. You did not enter his home, stole any of his memories, goods, hard earned cash, food out his fridge, raped his daughter, slit the throat of his dogs did you?

NO, no he did that to you but idiot commission of police still wants to limit the rights homeowners to protect themselves.

Sorry, mad dogs should be shot. WE as a society are better off without them! Fire is fought with fire for a good reason; it is a drastic solution to a problem potentially out of control, the ruling party willingly admitted by their own admission that they have lost the fight against crime.

Time for fire control, m’thinks?

I’ll kill to protect my daughter and children, would you bleeding hearts? Possibly you would ask them to use condom before raping your child because damn, those school fees for the unwanted HIV child nobody planned for is so inconvenient!

Oh Jack & Mickey, obviously you have never been a victim (or is it a rectum) of crime?

It will not be long before some enterprising pallisade fencing company will pay the “fence hanger” mega monies to use this bizarre picture to advertise the pros of having such an effective burglar impaling fence. hahahaha…

I ASSume he will now get a state deFENCE lawyer? Kinda sheds a whole new light on the meaning of breaking and entering…

Maybe the fence was an undercover scorpion agent in a sting op?

On a more serious note, he got what he and every other criminal deserves. We need our government to wake up and see wtf is happening in our beautiful country. I wonder if they will last a week if not protected by their convoys and 24 hour gaurds. I spoke to members of my family who now reside in the UAE and was suprised to learn that their police are as brutal with crime as our criminals are with us.

Earlier someone noted that fire should be fought with fire and I agree 100%. Be willing to receive what you hand out. If you feel like stealing, feel free but if you get caught, we chop of your hand. Feel like raping, no prob but be prepared to lose your manhood etc…

I love this country and its diverse population and strongly believe that we can be a force to be reckoned with on every field when our government decides to protect its most vital assets;US.

As for any future robber trying to get into my house, be warned, i sleep with palisade fences under my pillow.:-)

Museums have been hard hit by criminals, and continue to be targeted. These criminals, I believe, pretend to be visitors or tourists during the day. Funding for museums, on the other hand, is drying out. Security personnel, alarm system and CCTV cameras costs a lot. Criminals like this one always seek to take advantage of the situation, and they all end up being caught.

I invite many of the bloggers, including crime pretenders, to read Marijke Cosser’s article “Why Museums” in Albany Museum’s next issue of the Elephant’s Child (coming out before the end of September).

http://www.ru.ac.za/affiliates/am/pro.htm

Congratulations to the East London Museum. None of the bloggers seem to think or worry about what the intruder was looking for at the museum. Moreover, none of the bloggers seem to be worried about the damages to the door, or offer to pay for the repairs.

How can we feel sorry for a criminal who is in pain? How much pain have the victims of criminal activity in South Africa endured in the past? How many innocent people have been killed, women raped, families left in ruins after robberies, people maimed by assault, property damaged and destroyed? Yes, perhaps we can\’t assume that this criminal committed any of these specific crimes but how can we feel sorry for a person who is part of a sector of society which considers itself to be above the law? A person who thinks it is ok to break in to a museum – a centre for learning and historical preservation??? I have absolutely no sympathy for this guy. Serves him right.

An Observer

It has been a long time since such blatant truth has been written. I wish more of those type of articles would appear all over the world. It will make people think.

That way maybe we can curb the anarchy that is destroying Africa.

I totally agree with that writer, no matter how harsh, it should be forced that no aid should be given, for government to use their money to fund weapons. When they use their money to sustain their country, it will be a better Africa.

It is easier to give money to these government and keep their people out your country, and no care who dies. These aid agencies are not doing any good to these people.

You read most books written about people who have toured these countries and you will find the same thing said over and again.

And yes we do feel sorry for these people starving, but feed them up and give them gun when they have energy, and then they don’t have self pity anymore, they will kill you so fast, because they don’t feel a thing.

Sies, ziyonyanyisa ezi pics, I hate blood. I feel sorry for the guy. However, there’s always two ways of ‘learning’. You can either learn the ‘hard way’ or the ‘right way’. The poor guy chose the ‘hard way’, so take the ‘pain’ like a man, mate. Repent of your sins and live, says the Bible.
