Kowie residents rescue trapped buck (pics)

A Bush buck ram with an eye for an up-market address is lucky he was not turned into biltong for trying to “squat” on the manicured lawns of the swanky Port Alfred Marina, writes David Macgregor.

Instead of ending up on a meat hook last week, the two-year-old high roller bounced back in style after it was darted and moved across town to a country estate full of bush buck broads keen to broaden the gene pool.

Just how the buck managed to outsmart security guards, high tech cameras and electric fences to get into the Royal Alfred Marina is still a mystery.

Marina developer Justin de Wet Steyn on Monday speculated that the buck had been chased into the Kowie River by dogs further upstream.

“We can only assume it swam in on the high tide … There is no way it came over our 8000 volt electric fence.”

Although De Wet Steyn explained bush buck were good swimmers, he joked the ram was “lucky it took a wrong turn into the marina instead of going straight out the river mouth on the outgoing tide.”

The ram was spotted in a wooded area in the marina last Monday, much to the surprise of local residents, who immediately went into action to put a rescue plan in place.

How did they do it? See Tuesday’s print or online edition of the Daily Dispatch to find out.

Well done to the people that rescued him. At least there’s still good people in the world who didn’t find it too much of an inconvenience to try and relocate him rather than just shoot him.
