After much deliberation and judging, it is time for us to announce the winner of our grand prize for Saturday’s flip for two at the Elvin Extreme Airshow. Our lucky winner gets a fantastic flip for two up to Dwesa on the Wild Coast and back. So, without further ado, our winner is… (drumroll):
Steven!
Who bowled the online team over with the following entry:
(It was) 1943, we where returning from a successful bombing run over Bremen. Wings where shot to hell and we where only flying on one engine. In the distance we could just make out those magnificent white cliffs. I was fighting the controls to keep her leve…..then the damn PC rebooted. Having never flown, I can only hope the experience is half as exhilarating as that.”
Well, Steven, prepare yourself. After Saturday your experience of flying will be a lot more realistic!
On Saturday, you and the person of your choice will be flown up to Dweza and back for an aerial spectacular view of the Wild Coast which few of us have seen before, courtesy of the kind folks at Elvin and the Border Aviation Club.
The 45-minute flight will take you past some of the best views our coastline has to offer.
Congratulations once again!
To everybody else who entered the competition, thank you very, very much folks. there were some really excellent descriptions and we value your contributions.
Keep an eye out for our Elvin hamper and airshow ticket winners who entered the competition on our home page. We will be announce the names on Thursday.
@Kekelekeke: Since it’s my job to run this blog and to respond to your comment, I will gladly do so.
You are of course entitled to your opinion and we allow you the space to express it on this blog.
It is however unfortunate that you have decided to get personal with me.
The other bloggers here on DispatchNow 24/7 – who like you, entered the competition – have accepted our decision with good grace and have wished Steven well.
When you entered the competition, you also accepted the following disclaimer:
“Entries will be judged by the DispatchOnline team and our decision is final.” Please keep that in mind.
Now, having entertained your complaint and having explained to you why we think Steven a worthy winner, you are yet to put forward a convincing argument why you disagree.
But, since I think you have had ample space to make your point, I’m closing this blog for discussion.- Online News Ed.
Oh you lucky fish!!! Might see you there then!!!
I’m all good. Yeah i’m going. I’m also one the happy winners of 2 tickets tot he airshow “Compliments of Daily Disptach”…
Hey Ex-Com, all is good! How’s things on your side?
We might go to the airshow, are you going?
Rear End Of A Horse your seem to be as obtuse as the rest of the bloggers that criticize my comments.
I will repeat what I said earlier “My issue is not with Steven, his piece, the language or the length of it nor did I say it was. I agree it is a very original piece…”
What part are you missing? And why insult Steven by calling his submission a spiel?
Hi Zam, how are you doin? long time hey… are you going to the airshow…?
Congratulations Steve, I think it was very creative and entertaining.
Hope you enjoy your first time flying buddy!!
Dear Mr On-Line Editor, as this argument is closed, why not just make this thread unavailable for posting?
Congratulations to Steve. I enjoyed your spiel even if some humourless individuals didn’t.
Jan I will type slowly so you understand.
It has nothing to do with my entry or the quality of Steven’s entry or any other for that matter.
If any other qualifying entry had won I would not have said a word, however bad I thought it may have been (if it had been a bad entry).
My issue is that it simply does not qualify in terms of the criteria YOU set. Obviously you will now say it does as you have awarded the prize and cannot go back on your decision.
Please do not respond as it will take the matter no further.
If you go to the Airshow on Saturday and while you are looking up at the aircraft you may catch a glimpse of my argument, as clearly it is going right over your head.
@Kekelekeke: We are satisfied that Steven’s entry fulfils the criteria. If you want to argue semantics, so be it then, but I consider the discussion closed.
BTW – I thought your own description was very good as well. If it makes you feel any better, it was among our top five for consideration.
TO STEVEN WELL DONE !GREAT ORIGINAL PIECE.TO KEKELEKE…..OR WHATEVER U A DUMBASS SORE LOSER
Jan don’t be so obtuse.
My issue is not with Steven, his piece, the language or the length of it nor did Isay it was. I agree it is a very original piece and if it complied with the competition brief I would not have a problem.
If you missed the point of my blog then I fear for your newspaper.
Regarding your comment that I protest a little too much, what are you implying I am guilty of?
Methinks the shoe is on the other foot…
Steven is a worthy winner-Fullstop!!
There’s no need to justify that to anyone. His “flying” encounter is very original, creative and catchy.
@Kekelekeke! Thank you for pointing out the correct spelling of Dwesa.
However, Steven’s entry does in fact comply. If you read the criteria, I said in NO MORE than 150 words. Steven’s entry was 66.
Secondly, I not only asked for those who have flown before, but also those who have not.
We thought his entry about only flying on the computer was quite original.
Although maybe not in the best descriptive language, the feeling here is that Steven is a worthy winner.
I think you doth protest a little too much, no? – Online News Editor
Well done Steven….. have a nice time bro!
And by the way it is Dwesa not Dweza

Well done Steven, a very original piece.
However, with all due respect to the judges and appreciating that their decision is final and not taking anything away from Steven’s piece, I am shocked!
The competition was to: “Describe to us in no more than 150 words, your first experience of flight. It may be the first time you ever boarded a plane – or saw an aeroplane for the first time. If you have never flown before, we want you to describe what you think flying in an aeroplane might be like”
How does Steven’s piece comply with any of this? Not one iota. Astounding!!!
What is the point of having a competition when the winning entry does not even comply with the brief?
…erm…and by “blast” I dont mean it in the literal sense. Seriously, first time flier here. We dont need blasts of any kind.
Well done Steven ![]()
Hope you enjoy every minute of it!!
Congrats Steven, Enjoy.
I am still in shock after that phonecall. Thank you Jan and thank you Elvin and the Border Aviation Club. This is going to be a blast….
