Residents doing it for themselves!

Filed Under (consumer, council) by Jan Hennop on 04-11-2009 and tagged , , , ,

residentsHere’s a story that appeared on our front page on Wednesday morning. Fed-up residents of Buffalo City have joined forces to collect refuse in their suburbs  – a basic service they say the municipality has failed to provide, writes Msindisi Fengu.

In  past weeks, Buffalo City Municipality has been unable to organise the regular collection of refuse in suburbs.

Residents have complained that their suburbs are being turned into  pigsties, and  as a result have come up with  plans among themselves to tackle the build-up of uncollected rubbish.

Recent action taken by residents includes:

Gonubie residents hiring front-end loaders  and a truck two weeks ago to remove some of the dumped rubbish in Starling and Flamelily roads;

Tertiary institutions in East London teaming up last month to clean up the filthy suburb of Southernwood and its recreational parks;

In June, pupils from Sakhikamva High School in Nompumelelo township in Beacon Bay collected refuse in the area when they visited elderly people who live alone; and

In July, a group of residents from Bonza Bay, Beacon Bay and Blue Bend picked up trash and destroyed invasive alien plants near the Dune Forest in Bonza Bay.

The refuse movement has also already gained momentum in Amalinda, where a group of residents come together every Tuesday to clean up their area and collect refuse, which is then taken to a site from where  BCM is able to take it to a dump. Residents who own bakkies have volunteered to cart the refuse bags each week.

The community initiative is being driven by the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco).

Buffalo City Sanco sub-region chairperson Bantwini Deliwe said they had urged residents to collect refuse, while BCM was working on a turnaround strategy to sort out the problems.

“We asked residents to provide their bakkies  and come to clean up the Amalinda community. For now, we’ve started with the Balindlela area and we will be moving to  inner Amalinda and the whole of Buffalo City.”

Today Sanco will be meeting with residents’ associations from Buffalo City in North End to discuss ways of getting more people  involved in the drive to clean up their communities.

So, the community drive is on. The question this morning is: Do you think residents in middle-class suburbs are doing enough to get involved? Isn’t it time to mobilise residents’ associations? What about many people dilligently paying rates and taxes? Blog now and give us your opinion.

I cannot believe that the Council has an expectation for Residence to take care of this problem. Yes, residence need to be involved and pin point offenders etc, but it is not the function of rate payers to clean up.

Rate Payers PAY for this service and EXPECT that this is done under the control and effectiveness of a Democratic Government. Citizens spend enough time, enough money, pay enough taxes to afford the luxury of having weekends off, not to be collecting trash and maintaining a BASIC council function.

Come on Councilors and Government Employees responsible for the aesthetics of our Country, get off your lazy broad asses and get the job done!

Oh sorry forgot to add the following.
1. I would dearly love if there were someone av ailable with the various stats of money that we know has been squandered / embezelled and the relevant parties implicated names to be mentioned just to show how much money went missing, that is why the politicians in Bisho and ELN are so fat and lazy, the only thing they good for is embezzelining, planning what next to embezzel, eat tons of food drink only the best wine, whiskey etc. and this is money wasted on useless functions,credit cards etc.
2. The reason I mention ELN is as an insult to the coucillers as BCM is an insult to Buffalo who are brave, diligent and not scared to work and persue life not like our so called esteemed lazy coucillers.
3. These guys are 1000x more uselessthan the Nats ever were, oh and to the carders I nev er was a supporter or voted for the Nats but they at least provided better Health care and schooling for the blacks now both are an absolute joke of uselessness, bring your own blankets and sheet and food education well lets not even go down that road and speaking of roads well that in itself is totally beyond a joke.
SO suggestion being stop paying refuse collection, go and dump all youruncollected refuseon the Bisho and council officials front lawns as I can assure you they they have no refuse on their lawnsso dont mess up a once beautiful city rather give them the mess and see how fast it gets cleaned up

Well is this not typical of the ANC (Bone lazy, the only thing they are good at is embezeling money) Now lets consider a few points here;
1. No money for refuse collecting and service delivery, YET plenty of THOUSANDS of rands “NOT hundreds mind you0 on paties, conferences “With nothing constructive coming out of these THOUSANDS of rands Piss ups” only the best most expensive whiskey etc,TONS of food that is consumed just to make them EVER FATTER and plain bloody lazy.
The louder they make a noise unfortunately the masses tend to listen to their garbage, funny that a big garbage problem in ELN, must be all the garbage they talk “Classic eample Julies Malema, noise, noise, noise pathetic little fool, I will lay a months salary on the line the none of the ELN councilers and Bisho big wigs have got such huge garbage build ups, all sorted as the roads in umtata when JZ went to visit, What is a way better solution is don’t polute ELN go and DUMP your rubbis on the coucilers and Bisho officials front lawns and see how quickly the problem is resolved.
3. I wouldhate to know how much money has been squandered by ELN councilers and bBisho officials. it would be an interesting excersise to see howmuch money has been wasted by these idiots, and the sums calculated will only bethat, that has been disclosed as the rest will have mysteriously evaporated into thin air, i.e. watage on credit cards etc, etc. What arethe chances of someone having this kind of info at hand and doing the sums and put it onto the blogg, it would REALLY be great that if who spent what for what i.e. wastage is named and the amount wasted mentioned. Get tese lazy fools off the butts.

This is a catch 22 situation. If you dont pay your municipal account, they block you. You cannot buy electricity (if you have a meter) unless the outstanding amount is settled. It has happened to us so often. And then its not our fault. Its the staff at BCM that never allocated our payment. I cannot afford to be without electricity, with a toddler and one on the way. Maybe the better option would be to dump our rubbish infront of their offices. Can you imagine them not being able to open the doors every morning.

We don’t need to be re-imbursed. We need to stop paying for refuse collection until the bcm , actually & literally collects refuse. We as law abiding, tax paying, contributors to the economy have been taken for a ride far too long. We have to rid ourselves of this “yes sir”, submissive nature. WE MUST STAND UP TOGETHER AND BUILD THIS NATION

Sorry, that should read “Despite many calls to BCM even by DD, NOTHING gets done.” Yes, we have tried going through the city councillor as well!

If I call out a plumber to unblock a toilet and he doesn’t come so I manage to unblock it myself, is it legal for the plumber to insist on payment because the toilet is now unblocked? I don’t think so….!

Well, BCM think that they ARE that idiot plumber! We now have to do the work they bill US to do, and heaven forbid we don’t pay them!

What amuses me intensely, people living in blocks of flats pay, per flat, the same for refuse removals as people living in houses. Most of the blocks of flats have one or two big metal bins. The time taken for the refuse removal trucks to empty one of those bins is about the same as removing refuse from a house. Now, in a block of approximately 20 flats, they are collecting the equivilent of what they would collect from 20 houses for just one stop. Then, to add insult to injury, flats do not get black bags at all! We have to buy all our own.

Now, the gutters in front of my home are disgusting. They have been wet, muddy and filthy for the past couple of years. The pavements that a lot of elderly residents and disabled people in wheelchairs use are broken up and very uneven. The gutters are infested with rats who are also getting sick from the muck. There is always broken glass everywhere.

Despite many calls to BCM even by BCM, NOTHING gets done. I am so tired of it. The stink in summer is really bad so I am dreading the warmer weather coming. This is also a MAJOR health hazard for especially the kids and elderly people in the area! I also want to report BCM for animal cruelty to the poor rats in the gutters! How can BCM expect them to thrive in this muck as well?

I think it is utter nonsense that residents should do the work of BCM – what the hell do we pay them for! If the residence held back the service fees, you would quickly see BCM get their “turn around plan” into action! BCM must come and see “Green Park” in Olympic Avenue/Hamilton Rd in Cambridge – it is a disgrace. The residence got together a few weeks back and cut back overgrown vegetation but you must see the filth – there is medical waste and all kinds of dumped rubbish – residents have appealed to BCM for months to clean it up and put up no dumping signs – NOTHING HAS HAPPENED – but were all expected to pay for services! Lets hope this get’s some attention!!! Where is the ANC Councilor for Ward 1 – what has he done since he was elected – how many ward council meetings have taken place? How many public meetings have taken place in Ward 1? I think the ANC need to expel more than just Faku!!!

I think if basic services are starting to colapse, it is very worrying. We pay a lot for services that are suppose to be supplied by the municipality. Maybe what angry residents should do is go and dump their uncollected rubbish on the municipalities doorstep.

I think BCM should re-imburse us with the refuse removal monies they claim from us every month as the refuse is not removed on time & has been gathering for quite some time now. I say pay it back until they can get their heads screwed on right

Brent on 4 November, 2009 at 9:12 am \C\AM\SAST #

This is a typical picture of service delivery. Why is it that you pay for refuse to be collected twice or three times a week and sometimes only collected once a fortnite and when month end comes the account remains the same.
