Vavi’s salary: 100 percent increase

Filed Under (economy, labour, politics) by Jan Hennop on 04-11-2009 and tagged , , , , ,

vaviCosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi’s salary has doubled this year to R500,000 a year, a newspaper reported.

“My salary doubled because we were losing all the policy capacity in the federation,” said Vavi.

“The economists and accountants were all gone, because if you keep the salary at R250,000, it means the economists can’t make those sacrifices for years and years. They lose out.”

The newspaper said Cosatu administrators and researchers earned about R7000 per month while security guards earned less than R4000.

Vavi said several staff members in “economic” positions received 100 percent increases this year.

But the lower earning staff received only 15 percent wage hikes, reported The Star newspaper.

Vavi told The Star that his salary had risen to R500 000 a year in January, or R42 000 a month, after earning half of that “all my life”.

Vavi became general secretary 10 years ago.

Vavi has been very vocal in his criticism of SA Communist Party leader Blade Nzimande, who as Higher Education and Training Minister, recently bought himself a R1 million car.

So, does Vavi deserve the increase? Blog now and let us know.

Visa, I am not quite sure where you get your “apathate” facts from.
I worked for a municipality for a while. A rather large one if fact.
I couldn’t afford a car until I had worked there for a number of years. My boss didn’t earn a huge salary nor did his boss. In fact the director of the department DID bring his own snadwiches to work.
Your vision of us whites having been on a huge gravy train are totally wrong but guess what? We did spend our allocations and they did only get spent on budgeted items and there were no huge free lunches during training and seminars. I took my own lunch to training days and there were pitifilly few seminars.
Yes there were government officials who stole and misappropriated funds but we always found out and they always got to bite the bullet. Even John Voster got canned for misappropriating funds.
I left the Municipality and worked for real money in the capatilist system but again even as a senior manager never earned anywhere near where what senior government workers earn and again if I did not spend my budget and spend it on what it was allocated for, I was disciplined and those that did that more than once were asked to leave.
So dear Visa, the Visa card and the petrol money and the free lunches are NOT a white phenomenon. In this country they are an ANC phenomenon.
As for Mr Vavi and his 100% increase, all he has done is succumb to the seduction of the capitalist system like his buddy Blade

@ Visa. Morals, ethics and integrity are not values that you loose along the way due to your surroundings. I know many people who have faced terrible hardship and they still have their morals intact. Say what you want but you’ve painted a very clear picture of the person you are. If you are proud of yourself thats all that matters but don’t try and blame your lack of ethics and integrity on others – that is one of the few things that you control – no one can force you to abandon your values.

Visa on 5 November, 2009 at 11:31 am \C\AM\SAST #

…still a big joke to me that all of a sudden “you people” expect us to wake up the next morning and have “morals, integrity and ethics”, after so many years of oppression, slavery and sorts that obviously would have created a huge gap between us (whites & blacks)…

and yet you expect the few years of taking off the “Europeans ONLY” signs, that all must be normal?? Unless you are not normal!

So, you can be “Disappointed”, I could careless….to most of you there is nothing that is worth praise and accolades that blacks have done, except “Mandela” and only bcoz you want to don’t want to be left out to the rest of the world! Sies!…just face the facts and stop seing black and gloom when you see our beautiful dark skin! We are getting things right and even do better!

lol @ Opstoker – I have a mental image of JZ with a flower apron and yellow washingup gloves that I just can’t get out of my head now.

Look, the thing is I don’t know the guy.(Vavi) Personally never heard of him until today.
What I was trying to say is – its not an ‘unreasonable’ salary for someone in such a ‘high-powered’ position.
If he deserves it, then we should leave him be. If he doesn’t – well, maybe we should all focus more on ‘US’ and less on ‘THEM’. Its not going to change, but each one of us has it within ourselves to better ourselves, and not sit back and wait for hand outs or point fingers..
Compensation – if you’ve shunned a lifestyle of wealth, for a lifestyle of helping others, and are happy with the salary you earn – then thats fine. You’ve achieved what you wanted out of life, but if thats the case then why does it sound like you’re bitter against those of us that do want a bit more out of life..
Its not greed. I support my mother and father and sister on that salary, they never chose the path of furthering their education and they have nothing today. If I didn’t earn what I earn – they’d all be on the streets..

Er….What’s the Fuss? – as an accountant, maybe you deal with the top 3%. As I said earlier, the stats show that that salary puts him in the top bracket – besides all the freebies he gets, which makes it misleading. I ask again – doe she take his own lunch to work? Does he have an official car? And what about the Voyager miles? (Business Class or Economy?).

Look people, let’s be clear – if you worked hard for your money, good luck to you, and thank you for being the backbone of our economic growth. But if you’re that comfortable, please don’t strut up and down trumpeting that you are a champion of the poor and downtrodden, and harrassing the “bosses” and the “greedy capitalists”. That’s just downright hypocritical.

Can I be cheeky and ask a question – does ZV have a domestic helper at home? If so, what hours does she work, and how much does he pay her?

I have absolutely no problem with Vavi earning R500K…it’s well overdue…but his justification of those earnings doesn’t make any sense. One way of interpreting it is Opstoker’s way…but I wouldn’t even want to go there.

Compassion and Sense on 5 November, 2009 at 6:52 am \C\AM\SAST #

What’s the fuss is out of touch… there are thousands of people who have studied part time at their own expense and given, given and given. 18 years of study (12 years part time), a range of qualifications including a doctorate and a life time of serving the needs of children and students and I truly enjoyed what I did at not close to half of that salary of 500k… greed is the nature of our times. What gets my goat is those who claim to be “champions of the poor and down trodden” who have no conscience of using the money from the already poor to fill their pockets and live lives of luxury – how about some consistency between words and deeds? Vavi is the classic example of shouting the odds at the expense of the verby people to claims to champion!

Whats the fuss? on 5 November, 2009 at 5:59 am \C\AM\SAST #

Umh – I’m probably going to throw a cat amongst the pigeons – but I don’t think its that unreasonable. As professionals my partner and I both earn 650k and 520k respectively? As an accountant I work with peoples tax every single day – and let me tell you salaries of over 500k are not uncommon? As a matter of fact – its kinda low down on the scale. And no – not all of them are university educated, most of them just work really hard in positions that nobody else in their right mind would do. I tell you what – if anyone else out there thinks that they can do that job and be satisfied with less than 500k a year – then go for it. I don’t think a lot of people realise just what goes into a job where you’re responsible for answering to hundreds of thousands of workers… And people who don’t earn that amount and want to moan about it – sorry, you should’ve taken the path less travelled and studied like I did, part time – over 11 years, scraping by on article clerks wages. Don’t begrudge others for what they have achieved.

“I earned half that salary all my life” says Vavi. I earned half that salary for just two years, after 36 years as an educator but I guess taking/stealing from the poor is obviously more important than educating a nation!! Interesting, Vavi gets paid when his Union members are on strike so calling for strikes never touches his pocket. The word HYPOCRISY springs to the fore – so what is new in the ANC/SACP/COSATU Alliance. Two “perties who haven’t gor the guts to stand for election under their own banner but demand to have all the say. Sure signs of retardation when they are so blind to their own faults. Vavi, take another R500k p.a. and drain the funds dry… and do it quickly. Welcome to Africa, the continent of corruption!!

I guess some people in SA will not be affected by this recession. Goerge Orwell wrote in one of his books, ” All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than the others”. South Africans brace yourselves.

I don’t understand the details of how Vavi had his salary increased so much. But I’m shocked when I think that people who are contributing their money to the Cosatu every month earn about 90% less from what he earns right now.
Guys we love you because you are the voice of the voiceless but to me its seems as if you are looting like capitalists that I have learn to hate in my life.

@ Visa – you should be embarrassed. Not only are you telling us that two wrongs make a right but you are also shouting it out loud and clear that you lack ethics, morals and integrity. GO GIRL – YOU ARE RIGHT WHERE YOU BELONG AND I BET YOU FIT IN PERFECTLY.

Visa, sadly I fear that there is an element of truth in some of your words.

However, is there not a saying that goes like, “All it takes for evil to ‘exist’(?) is for good people to say nothing.” (Please excuse the incorrect quotation.)

Thus pre 1994 where were the “good people”? But now we enjoy a democracy and freedom of speech. It is time for the “good people” to stand up and be counted – and “good people” are colourless! So do we need racist overtones?

Opstoker on 4 November, 2009 at 4:10 pm \C\PM\SAST #

To add: what kind of justification is it for any sort of behaviour that “it happened under apartheid – therefore they must be left alone (to loot etc.)”. A primary school child could explain to you why the ethics that you are arguing are nonsense.

Opstoker on 4 November, 2009 at 4:07 pm \C\PM\SAST #

Visa, go get a moral compass, you lump of myopic lard. You’ll find one – in exile! Or buried with OR Tambo.

@Visa. So it’s quite alright to mismanage, misgovern and generally be corrupt because other governments (including the Nats) do / have done it and f— the consequences? As twisted minds go, yours could hide behind a spiral staircase.

Visa on 4 November, 2009 at 3:52 pm \C\PM\SAST #

Lizzie, that is why I don’t even understand you people bitching about this!

@Lizzie, with only Patrice in the top five, we are still a long way! I am glad you also notice that!!! LOL

Gee, I say God is alive and He has made a turn about that you people never in your wildest dreams thought it will happen…”Darkies are wearing designer clothes, lavish cars, posh houses, dining and wining with y’all and to top it all, they even “know the stock exchange?!” Wow! I am so proud of my people!!

Angie on 4 November, 2009 at 3:46 pm \C\PM\SAST #

C’mon guys – give the man a break. I am sure COSATU subs will go up to cover this. This has been happening for decades, since Robin Hood’s days, steal from the rich to give to the poor but the poors taxes increase! It never made sense.

Visa on 4 November, 2009 at 3:46 pm \C\PM\SAST #

Emandi, “inferior?” not a flippin chance, not after such blood shed by my fellow black people to fight these twisted minds, including yours!

You are so right “it is not the white people that are now taking lavish holidays and living it up…it is now the same people that you voted for that are taking your money and my money!!!”

So, what’s wrong with that??? If the apartheid government “did it” and other countries “did it”….why can’t my black “fat” brothaz and sistaz; who fought for our liberation “did it”??!

Emandi, if you are white..I forgive you for being ignorant but if you are black…”here’s a mop and a bucket, Doris”

Visa
You say that white people have this twisted mentality of being superior, which means that you are actually saying that as a black person, you have a twisted mentality of being inferior!
Why do you feel inferior???

Lizzie on 4 November, 2009 at 3:08 pm \C\PM\SAST #

LOL, ahh Visa, such a cute statement, but hey, us white people don’t belong to Cosatu. It’s the poor back people that are paying for this salary. Just one question, when they tell the poor to strike for better wages, do they actually give them money to feed there families? Do they stop there deductions on the poor people salaries? No they don’t. As soon as the strike is over the poor need to pay “back pay” to cosatu.

Ohh and one more question, when last did you actually look at the list of rich people in SA? Do your self a favour.

…I am appalled by the people that really believe the standard of living of these leaders must be lower than those of the previous government, a few years later nogal! Do you really expect these folks to drive tazz, golfs, hilux and so on? You really take us for monkeys! The sad thing is that, you turned a blind eye to the wealth that your folk has accumulated whilst in power…posh houses in George, Constantia, Haartees, Offshore and lavish holidays they still enjoy! Leave my people! Let them sip the gravy they deserve it too!

The bitching and mourning is just symptoms of deep seated hatred that most white people in this country have for black people and that twisted mentality of being superior! Ag shame, I feel for you!! It’s not easy nhe????

I don’t think that most government officials CAN tighten their belts. They don’t sell belts that large!….

Imagine the uproar if the MD of Pick n Pay or Spar or one of those places gave themself an increase like this? There would be an uproar of note!! I think Visa would be first in line to scream as would one or two of the other bloggers who’s names we shall not mention.

We can ***** and moun all we want. They will just carry on regardless. Want dis mos wat hulle toekom. Whenever i read these stories, i cannot help but remember the minister that told us on SABC to tighten our belts, and then his arse broke the chair. Anyone remember that video?

Viva ANC!!!

And can somebody help me with the total gobbledegook explanation he gave to justify it? Is he saying, “Because I can’t get any economists to work for me [Duh!], I need to pay myself more, so that I can pay them more…because it just wouldn’t do to have an economist earning more than I do!”

Opstoker on 4 November, 2009 at 2:13 pm \C\PM\SAST #

That miserly package puts him among the top 3% in the country – but I guess it’s a tough job being a champion of the poor and downtrodden workers.

“I earned half of that all my life” – ag, shame, Zweli, only R250k?. I earned a quarter of that for most of my life as a professional educator!

What I want to know is: is the free car, free petrol, credit card, free meals, free travel and free accommodation part of that R500k?

I think we, SARS and the workers at large deserve an answer.

Dave Rankin on 4 November, 2009 at 2:12 pm \C\PM\SAST #

Typical COSATU. Speak Socialist. Live Capitalist. When directors of a private (capitalist) business vote themselves such increases, the shareholders unite and teach them the error of their ways. When the ANC/COSATU/SACP alliance does the same thing, “the people” stop protesting service delivery and vote them in for another term of office. Somewhere in S.A. there is a special School-of-Stupidity.

Lizzie on 4 November, 2009 at 2:03 pm \C\PM\SAST #

Wow, and who said we are in a resession!! LOL, keep up the good work and take more from the poor to enrich yourself! Viva ANC Viva!

What the heck!!! How does he survive on R500k salary and driving a R1m car?? Surely someone sponsered him. I would not be surpriced if Glen Agliotti’s chueqbook worked

Visa on 4 November, 2009 at 1:57 pm \C\PM\SAST #

Of course, I strongly support the increase, he deserves it! His work together with other devoted and still principled cadres has been enomous!! Thank you Vavi…from the working class and the poor!
