A young taxi driver who believed in himself has been named the national Number One Taxi Driver of the year, beating eight other drivers from other provinces, writes Xolisa Mgwatyu.
For his efforts, Lunga Tilolo, from East London, won a new Toyota Quantum Ses’fikile in which he will now ferry passengers.
“I could not believe it when I was announced as a winner, because the competition was tough and all other participants showed that they wanted the taxi,” said Tilolo.
The 25-year-old driver said he has been driving his father’s taxi, but now he will have his own to drive.
“In all I will do, I will have to consult my father because he’s the one who showed me how it works in the taxi industry,” said Tilolo.
In the Eastern Cape, taxi drivers from five districts entered it in June.
Tilolo came first in the provincial competition, beating 14 other district finalists. His name went to the national competition, contesting against eight taxi drivers from all other provinces.
In the competition, taxi drivers were given theory on how to drive and advanced training on the roads in ensuring that they are further enhanced in driving skills.
Tilolo said it was not easy when he started as the officials were looking for every mistake that he would make while putting the theory into practice.
“I thought I knew how to drive but there were some things that were shown to me which made me a better driver,” he said.
He said the training included the way a driver sits, being courteous, obeying road rules, ensuring safety and security while behind the wheel and controlling a vehicle on wet roads.
So, just goes to prove that there are some decent taxi drivers out there. Do you agree? Blog and give us your opinion!
well done Lunga, keep up the good work.
may you go from strength to strength and be a good example for all drivers – not just taxi drivers!
Well done Lunga. I wish that with your example, the taxi industry can learn from you. In fact,I hope the Dept of Transport can use examplery people like Lunga to preach the message of good morals in this industry. as far as I am concerned this is one industry that needs Govt intervention. If that can be put together, as passengers we will benefit a lot as the taxi entrepeneurs will also be harvesting their fruits as well. Once again well done Lunga. Please ke you must follow what your father has taught you and continue to be a good person, nothing must change, just be better than what you were. God bless you young man. You have made EL proud and you put us on the map in OUR BELOVED COUNTRY.
DEDICATED POLICE HAVE DONE GOOD WORK
Allow me to make these words of appreciation for the wonderful work that has been done by Police Officers from Newton Park’s Sea Point Police Station. These dedicated peace loving Government Police Officials displayed their skills of protecting the innocent citizens from criminals in Port Elizabeth’s Summerstrand area.
My daughter and her two friends, all from NMMU,were robbed of thier handbags, at gun point. They called the Police, but before the others arrived, a team of Police Officers with Inspector Mantshiyose and Constable Mfolozi came to their rescue. They traced the crimials until they arrested one of them. The three girls recovered their bags with the Identity Documents,Mobile Phones and Bank Cards but could not recover the money.
I wish all policemen and women in South Africa could work as the team had done. They did not ignore the public that was calling for help from them. If our country could keep poeple of the calibre of the team from Newtonpark Sea Point Police Station, crime could be reduced to a finish. Well done to all of you; Inspector Mantshiyose and your team. You went out of your way and did not complain of the jurisdiction or “other important” mision you were to achieve. I am proud of you.
Thank you
MERRIMAN MATANDABUZO

The drivers in East London, thry drive into abayitandayo
Lunga – Well Done , you have made East London proud!! May you grow from strength to strength with your new vehicle.
Well done Rons u made us very proud homeboy …all the best
So – if we have the best driver in East London – that must make us average over all when bringing all the drivers into account.
Congrats. There are some good taxi drivers out there, just few and far between. Maybe Lunga can now educate the other taxi drivers in EL on how to become better and safer drivers. What a lot of taxi drivers don’t realise is that when a passenger feels safe and is treated with courtesy and respect, they will be a lot more inclined to use that driver and also recommend him to others.
Keep up the good work and don’t forget what you have been taught.
Well done!!!! It’s good to know that there are taxi drivers setting a good example on the road
