East London=rubbish dump?

Filed Under (consumer, council, environment) by Jan Hennop on 11-11-2009 and tagged , , , , ,

rubbleLess than one kilometre from East London’s City Hall, dumped rubble and dirty nappies have been left to fester for over six months, writes Msindisi Fengu.

And just outside the  heart of the city – in Bowl’s Road and Atlas Road – several business owners are fed up with  how illegal dumping outside their premises’ make trading a dirty concern.

The refuse crisis in Buffalo City – reported on at length for some time in this newspaper – has businesses and residents raising concerns over alleged illegal dumping of building rubble along the roadside in East London.

A furious resident pointed out the  the illegal dumping at the corner of Oxford and Muir Street.

“About 20 nappies were dumped there and the rubble had been there for six months,” the concerned resident said.

Several business owners along Bowls Road in East London’s Southernwood suburb said on Tuesday dumpings had negatively affected trading in their businesses.

Midas Motor Parts Centre manager Ivan Hill said Bowls Road was “worse than tips (dumpsites), as refuse (rubble) piles were put along the road.

“No-one is going to come to this side of the town when rubbish is lying along the street. This is affecting our business (operations).”

Hill said an unknown person had dumped rumble in front of his business on Friday.

“When I came out of the business, at around 5pm, I saw someone had illegally dumped his refuse on the pavement in front of my business,” Hill said.

Another business owner, who did not want to be identified, said the rubble in front of the TAC Distributions building has created an untidy environment for business in the vicinity.

He said Bowls Road was “literally a dumpsite” and BCM should impose harsh fines on  culprits.

He pointed a finger at  another business property along the Atlas Road, which formed part of Thesen’s Generators, which he claims had packed rubble illegally outside its premises.

But TAC Distributions owner Dave Willows said they were busy with building alterations.

“This is temporary construction work, which will be finished towards the end of the week,” Willows said.

Willows said the rubble had been put in his business premises and would be removed soon.

Sigh… Is there any end to dumping in our city? Read the full story in Wednesday’s print or online section of the Daily Dispatch.

I am glad I don’t live in East London anymore.I am only coming back in Dec because my family is there.Sies! and the municipal manager what does he/she say about it.Woza 2010 I think East londoners should also do what teh residents of Mpumalanga did and go on a march to show their displeasure at having to live in such a dump.Where is the accountability, Look at it this way they would be burning the rubbish in the process.

@Phumselo. Yesterday you entertained us with a wonderfull movie where they cut back and forth between the slums of apartheid and the rich suburbs of whites.
Well, they are making another such movie.
Scene 1: The slums of broken down RDP houses built by corrupt officials.
Scene 2: For dramatic effect they cut into a scene from the rich suburbs of East London. Cut cut , shouts the director, I did not want another slum scene. We are in the rich suburbs, shouts the film crew, this is the suburbs managed by the ANC, you know!!!!

Nothing can be done – we are past that point.

Lawlessness now reigns. No one cares about litter. No one cares about traffic violations. No one cares about noise pollution. No one cares about drunken people in the streets. No one cares if the mayor is allowed to do as she pleases with her credit card

It is too late to change. BCM is leading the way by example, and until they change, no one else will bother

We live with this day in and day out!

Daily we see people just throw paper, etc on the ground. The other day a group of teenagers walked down St Georges Road breaking bottles as they walked along. They thought it was great fun. Unfortunately by the time I saw who it was breaking the bottles, they were too far down the road. This is the same broken up walkway that the elderly from Manor House have to walk on!

I agree that spot fines need to be inforced for littering. These fines can then go to educating people on the environmental impact of litter! Even Oprah had a show recently about where litter ended up and it’s impact on the environment.

Why aren’t SABC, Radios, etc all campaigning for clean environments? Is it just Daily Dispatch.

Come on guys, clean up your act – literally!

As much as i’m not very fond of bcm, herein lies an even deeper problem with civilians. Lack of self respect and pride. How can you take your trash and **** soiled nappies and simply thrown them wherever you feel like it?

Don’t the people that live here take pride in their city? I thought humans tried to dispose of their waste in a civilised manner? Whats going on?

we all know EL in a slum town. What is going to be done about it?

Let’s stop moaning and introduce spot fines of R1000 plus or straight to jail!!
