Beacon Bay residents have decided to revive the suburb’s ratepayers association which has been inactive for several years, writes Babalo Ndenze.
The decision to breath new life into the association that will give concerned Beacon Bay residents a voice was made at an Accountability Campaign meeting held in Beacon Bay this week.
The associations first meeting will be held on Monday, December 9.
The Accountability Campaign said all ratepayers of Beacon Bay, Abbotsford, Nahoon Valley, Dorchester Heights, Nompumelelo and other wards are welcome to attend the meeting.
Beacon Bay councillor Rowan Thiele said he was present at the meeting when the decision was taken.
“I know that at the time of (former ward 29 councillor) John Cupido there was talk of creating a ratepayers association. But as you know the ward is split in two, right down the middle. At the time Cupido couldn’t initiate it alone. But with the changing of boundaries (in 2011) most of Beacon Bay will be one ward,” said Thiele.
In 2011 neighbouring Nompumelelo township and Beacon Bay will part ways when Buffalo City Municipality becomes a metro.
The areas, currently in the same ward, will separate under a proposal by the Municipal Demarcation Board.
