The suspicious death of a high flying Port Alfred boat builder who was found with a bullet in his head on Monday has raised more questions than answers, writes David Macgregor.

The discovery of Andrew Reynolds’ body in a house near Grahamstown on Monday comes days after the sheriff of the court visited his A and G Marine business to attach goods to cover an unpaid rent bill of more than R100 000, and has echoes of the similar slaying of mining magnate Brett Kebble.

Legal sources on Wednesday told the Daily Dispatch Friday’s rent interdict was the “tip of the iceberg” and that company debts ran into millions of rands.

“There were lots of other fish to fry… he was about to be liquidated and sequestrated to the tune of R8million,” a source revealed.

Captain Mali Govender on Wednesday confirmed police were treating Reynolds’ death as murder after he was found in the Fort Brown house on a friend’s game farm under “mysterious circumstances.”

Nothing was stolen and no weapon was found.

She said the investigation was at a “sensitive stage” and that specialist investigators had been called in to solve the killing.

Friends said they were baffled as to how the alleged killer got past an electric fence and three Alsatian dogs before shooting Reynolds.

The “most vicious” of the guard dogs – which would “protect him at all costs” – was reportedly found locked-up in a nearby outbuilding.

No arrests have been made.

The owner of the unnamed hunting lodge, who was a friend of Reynolds, was overseas when the attack occurred and the burly boat builder had been living in the house for several months – commuting daily to his business in Port Alfred.

Calling the business a financial “house of cards”, a legal source said one local businessman recently won a R2m High Court judgment against Reynolds and that there were several others owed up to R1m for boats they paid for but never received.

My condolences to all who suffered this way. Yes, its very true, some people would find it extremely difficult to change their lifestyle, especially those who do much of bragging of their status….blame it to the recession again! more is yet to come.
