Trashbusters: The campaign continues!

trashlogo.jpgOver the last few months, the DispatchOnline team has received numerous pictures of how litter is threatening to turn our city into one big rubbish dump. On Thursday, we are featuring some of the pics we have received – together with a letter from one of our readers which appeared in the paper this morning. Vera Kean writes:

East London sinking in filth:

rubbish3Our city is filthy and is getting worse every week. Every day I see more and more litter, more and more overgrown sidewalks and general filth everywhere.

I went to the beachfront after the downpour on Sunday afternoon and it was in an appalling state. I took a series of pictures. The storm drains were so blocked up with leaves and debris that they could not cope with the rainwater from a heavy shower. As a result, all the litter was spread across the streets.

How on earth do we expect to attract tourists to our once beautiful city?

Please could Buffalo City Municipality do something about this.

I cannot believe they do not have the ability or manpower to have teams of workers rubbish2servicing a neighbourhood weekly and cleaning up our city. It should be a priority.

Another example of where there is no desire to make a difference is at the newly installed traffic circle in Selborne. It’s great and it certainly makes a difference to the traffic flow but could the roads department not have planted some plants or paved the area around it? Already it is overgrown with weeds and looks unsightly.

Litter bugs also need to be educated. I find myself stopping people who litter and asking them to pick up their rubbish and place it in the dustbin next to where they have just dropped it.

Nahoon Beach is a prime example. Shame on those people who leave their litter there. Have they no self- respect?

Please let us work together with the rather pathetic municipality and try to make a difference. Have some pride and let us restore the beauty around us.”

The letter says it all really…

Herewith some more trashy pics, taken by our readers over the last few months:

I did not think I would ever say it, but guys, these are pictures of WHITE South Africa too.
I see white folks littering, dumping, throwing papers and cigarette butts out of cars.
We all need to make an effort to save the world from becoming a garbage pit!!!!

Why not keep that paper until you get home or see a bin along the road?
Stick your “stinky” butt in the ashtray of your car. (It may convince you to give up smoking!!)

Beware of throwing stones when it is you in the “glass house”.
