A stone that was thrown through Janice Ley's sunroof

An East London couple escaped serious injury on Tuesday night when big rocks were thrown at cars passing underneath an overhead bridge on Settlers Way, reports Bongani Fuzile.Janice Ley, was driving on Settlers Way coming from East London airport when she noticed a group of people throwing stones at passing vehicles.

“It was after 8pm and the vehicle driving in front of me was hit by the rocks and I thought it was just a flying object. As I was coming closer to thestones 3 trespasser bridge, I noticed these people were throwing stones at us. We were very lucky,” said Ley.

Stones hit Ley’s bonnet, windscreen, roof, side window and back door. One big stone came through her open sunroof and landed on the centre console, nearly hitting Ley.

“My car was damaged and people must be careful when travelling there at night. It’s dangerous.”

Police spokesperson Superintendent Mtati Tana on Wednesday confirmed the incident.

“That place is notorious and people have just to be careful when travelling there at night.”

Tana said no one has been arrested by police.

I’m calling the police to move quickly and patrol that area cause I’m travelling that road daily. As law abiding citizen, I wont like to get hurt or traumitized by senseless thugs!

i think these people seek attention and they are just brainless scum. imagine going to your insurence and having to explain what happened to you.

How can this idiot police Supt. say “That place is notorious and people have just to be careful when travelling there at night.”? What are the police doing about it? Are they having patrols there? Are they responding to reports and complaints? Are they actually even TRYING to find the culprits?

DD, please tell this man to please tell us exactly WHAT is being done to bring these hooligans to book?

The lame, police responses and lack of action will do nothing but better than making our country a more crime ridden area. These boys will be tempted to throw rocks at a trigger happy and gatvol individual’s car, and i can assure the’ll be falling off that bridge like flies under the mercies of a notrious insect killer

Wait until I empty my 0.38 into them.
Then you will see police reaction!!

This was really a ridiculous comment by a senior police officer.
Why does he not explain what care the public should in his wisdom take when travelling there at night? That could be more helpful than his senseless talking.

Bloody hell, I have to travel this road daily to get to work and back. Thousands of people do. Are you telling me the police are going to quietly sit back, eat their donuts and wait for someone to be killed? Just one car needs to lose control and many will be wiped out. How about positioning someone there? Or patrolling at different hours? GEESH!

It is the police’s job to ensure that the public is safe from criminals. However the public also has the onus to stay safe. After all the police are also humans and cannot predict when criminals will strike!!!So citizens stop flippin complaining and start using your common sense,it’s a rough world out there and no one can stop it,the police are at least the ones trying to make a safe country.

And the shocking thing is that Fleet Street Police station is a few hundred metres away. But I agree Mr Tana, that is a lame ass comment. Must I now travel via Buffalo pass to get to town at night. Hell, thats risky in itself.

You know what! Gadget & Emandi – I agree with you! Shoot first & ask questions later… These thugs are endangering our lives. wait until it happens to a cop car, then you’ll see how quickly something is done. Even better, wait ’til they actually injure or kill someone, then you’ll how quickly someone takes action – but why do we always have to wait for someone to die before action is taken? I travel this road every morning and every afternoon and I have always been wary of the pedestrian bridge – they should close the bridge and make them walk across the highway – hmmm…. target practice!

Have you seen the size of the cop’s at Fleet Street ? They could not even clime up to the bridge.

schmeagle on 19 November, 2009 at 7:20 am CAT #

@MIRROR, dont you mean KFC instead of donuts. These people should be shot and the little beggar kids should be locked up too, they are a nuicence, they run accross the highway they beg at your car and get offensive with you when you tell them to go away.

My paint ball gun is loaded with steel ball bearings, maybe that will do the trick.

@ Schmeagle – yeah, finger licking skiving off.

Paintball gun…lemme at them…c’mon c’mon…pleeeeeeaaaaaaze??? They will think twice if projectiles are suddenly fired back at them. I can vouch that mine will fire 55 flipping paintballs per second back at the sods. Let them try top that.

GadgetBRfm on 19 November, 2009 at 9:11 am CAT #

cyclepath….. I think I know a few bloggers including BronB and myself that will join you in a secons…. Lets stake out the place… Matrix style…. them we let them have it. I will putt my ‘balls’ in the freezer the night before for that extra sting ! ( that might sound sicko I know )

schmeagle on 19 November, 2009 at 9:14 am CAT #

Anyone want the steel ball bearings, I can organise for you. Believe me they hurt a hell of a lot more than frozen paint balls and make much bigger bruises.

GadgetBRfm on 19 November, 2009 at 9:18 am CAT #

Ja but schmeagle thats murder. And I like shooting for the head !…. At least the paintbals explode !

It’s not just the cars that are being lobbed at but the ones that have to drive over the rocks in the aftermath that are also put in danger. My windscreen was smashed a while back when one of these little brats chucked a rock off the overpass near hemingways. It’s malicious!

Sandie in Germiston on 19 November, 2009 at 10:11 am CAT #

hi guys, a sting sounds brilliant, imagine their faces when suddenly they get hit, but paintball is abit mild, they must really really get hurt….as you guys say, only when something bad happens to a motorist will the saps do anything…………
these days one doesnt really find a DEDICATED policeman or nurse or traffic. To them it is just a JOB that provides money at the end of the day !!!!!!!

Amza on 19 November, 2009 at 10:42 am CAT #

Can someone get us a new Police Spokesperson because the one that we have is not well equiped.Who is this Tana anyways I would love to see him, with stupid comments all the time.

schmeagle on 19 November, 2009 at 10:54 am CAT #

@GADGET you throw them over the bridge when you were finished with them and say that they were throwing rocks over the bridge and over balanced. Anyway if you hit them in the right spot on the head it wont kill them, might give them a bit of brain damage but not kill them.

GadgetBRfm on 19 November, 2009 at 12:13 pm CAT #

Ahhhh…. BRILLIANT thinking schmeagle. Dont u want to become police commander at fleet street

BronB on 19 November, 2009 at 5:35 pm CAT #

LOL!!! You guys are hilarious – and brilliant… Steel ball bearings’ll do the trick! But you can also get ceramic paint-ball sized bullets which are just as good as ball bearing but they won’t stuff your marker up… Gadget, hot dog, Schmeagle & Cyclepath – I say we do this thing… If the cops won’t then we will – whaddaya say?! Lemme at ‘em – I’m locked & loaded… I am desperately out of practice and need some target practice! the beauty of a paintball marker is they’ll never be able to trace it back to you if you use paintballs – there are no bullet reminants for forensics to check! Bwahahahahah!!!

schmeagle on 20 November, 2009 at 10:26 am CAT #

@GADGET, dont think I qualify to be a police commander, I dont eat donuts or nor am I too partial on KFC either and I think I may just take the “SHOOT TO KILL” theory and use it too many times.

Quick word for the good cops. I went to Cambridge Police Station yesterday to report a house break-in. Very professionally handled and a follow-up call this morning. The idiot at Fleet street could learn from them.
