A pair of healthy twin girls were the first babies delivered at the new Life Beacon Bay hospital, reports Xolisa Mgwatyu.
The early arrivals, delivered at about 6pm on Tuesday, were Awakhe and Alawule, born to proud Butterworth parents Phumza and Buntu Nyhiba, and weighed 2.2kg and 2.1kg respectively.

Mother Phumza, 24, had undergone a caesarian and is also the first mother to recover in the posh VIP suite.
“I was not even aware that my babies were the first to be delivered in this hospital,” she said, adding she was looking forward to being a parent with Buntu.

The proud dad said: “We are so blessed to be parents, after so many times we have been trying, hence we named them “Awakhe amandla alawule” (God’s will has happened),” he said.

He said they has also decided to give their babies nicknames – “Beacon” and “Bay”.

Marketing and communications co-ordinator for Life Border Ailsa Thorpe confirmed that at least 12 bundles of joy had already been born in the newly-built Life Beacon Bay Hospital since the maternity unit moved there on Tuesday afternoon.

Its not the man that determines the gender of a child, and no herbs, mooti or toordery will do the job either!!!

@Recent Visitor: Technically you are correct – it is the sperm that carries either the X or the Y chromosome. But, realistically, I seriously doubt there has ever been a man who has had the ability or the inclination to decide which are going to be ejaculated. It’s pot luck. (And the reason for so many sperm being released to fertilise one – maybe two – eggs, is because there has never been a man prepared to ask directions).
