Anger boils over jobs promise for EL residents

Filed Under (breaking news, council) by Jan Hennop on 02-12-2009 and tagged , , , , ,

breakingnewssmallThe situation at East London’s North End stadium was tense on Wednesday morning after hundreds of Duncan Village residents braved the rain and cold to attend a recruitment meeting at which they were promised that they would get cleaning jobs, DispatchOnline’s Sino Majangaza reported from the scene.

Residents huddled together to wait for official word after a mysterious white vehicle with a loudhailer drove around the impoverished area on Tuesday night, promising people that they would be given jobs on Wednesday to clean the city’s beaches.

The unidentified announcer in the vehicle said 600 people were needed for the job.

Police and traffic officials are on the scene, but emotions are running high with some desperate residents waiting since 6am in the drizzle.

“I have been here since 7am because I wanted to arrive early,” said DV resident Nontembiso Bangani.

“There has been nobody to tell us what’s going on and no explanation,” she said.

Other residents said they were angry as they were being taken advantage of because they were poor.

Buffalo City Municipality Mayor Zukisa Faku’s office has distanced itself from the call, saying that it did not eminate from the council, reported Babalo Ndenze.

It is disgusting that someone can take advantage of people that are in desperate situations like those resident in Duncan Village. What satisfaction did you derive from your action? Those people were there hoping that in some way they could earn some money to provide for their families. Something which we seem to take for granted.. having a job. They don’t, they don’t know what they are going to eat tonight. I seriously hope that whoever did this is made accountable for his / her actions. We live in a sick and heartless society.

I hope they find this idiot, and make him clean Eastern Beach each day throughout the festive season, whilst all the party goers mock him or her! This is disgusting!

Mirka, it would be much more fitting to have the clown clean up in Duncan Village each day through the Festive Season – without pay, of course.
That way, the people of DV could be hired to clean up at the Eastern Beach and at Marina Glen during the same period.

this is really sad, but i think it wouldn’t be a bad idea if bcm hired these people. seemingly they could do with more employees to clean up, not only the beaches, but the whole city.

musze, that,is a very good idea. Problem is the BCM has probably spend the money needed to pay the Duncan Village people on workshops/seminars/legotla/Bafana Bafana sports shirts (leather jackets?) – you know, all the really vital stuff that the people of BCM really need.

Rear End Of A Horse, if only the ruling party (local) was half as good at service delivery as they are at firing mayors, this could easily be the cleanest city in RSA. bcm has got to be the worst performing city in the republic, and it’s sickening.
