BBay hit by burglaries!

Filed Under (crime) by Jan Hennop on 02-12-2009 and tagged , ,

copsBurglars are running amok in the East London suburb of Beacon Bay and residents are scrambling to find ways to protect themselves and their property, writes Msindisi Fengu.

At least two adjacent homes in Clear View Crescent were broken into over the weekend.

In one incident, which happened in the early hours of Friday morning, suspects entered the house and made off with several items.

Owner Janique Ferreira, who has two children, said they woke up on Friday morning and discovered they had been burgled while they slept.

“My 7-year-old daughter Tegan has been affected the most. She refuses to go anywhere in the house without someone with her and she doesn’t want to sleep in her room.”

“The items are worth over R10 000 in total. We are not insured so as a result we cannot afford to replace the items.

“We suspect our house was watched, as the break-in happened after my husband Jacques arrived home at around 1am on Friday.”

Ferreira has since started posting letters to other homes in the vicinity informing them of the burglary.

“I also plead to residents to get together to try and find a solution to these crimes that are spinning out of control,” she said.

When the Dispatch team visited her house a security company was busy putting in an alarm system.

The house next to Ferreira’s was hit on Saturday night. The owner, who did not want to be named, said he was away when the incident happened. “I left the house on Friday afternoon and returned on Sunday morning.”

Our catch & release justice system ensures that criminals get to commit their offences over and over again , without appropriate punishment being applied. The victims of crime end up “Jailing” themselves by installing all sorts of security facilities in and around their homes. I have great sympathy for those who are affected.

I just read the “full online edition” of this article. It also doesn’t help when the DD publishes the fact that there is only 1 police van patrolling the area! It seems as though even the “good areas” of East London are no longer the safe havens they used to be. We are no longer safe in our beds at night.

With the expansion of nompumelelo on the one side of B/Bay and the ability to cross the Bonza Bay beach to Gonubie settlement, B/Bay is surrounded. These settlements are providing safe havens for the thieves. At what point are the B/Bay residents going to stand up and say enough is enough. 3 months ago we caught 3 guys trying to steal a bakkie, but were released because they technically had not got away with the vehicle. The next one i catch, im taking for a swim at the beach.

Our vehicle was also stolen from our driveway within the early hours of a Friday morning – they clearly had their hearts set on our vehicle as they drove past all the other vehicles en route to our home right at the end of the street – it only took them seconds to steal it as they came prepared with all the necessary tools. Just a pity people can’t work for what they want – they have to take what belongs to others…..

Ja, Ja…Beacon Bay was thee suburb then, before nompumelelo era. Gone are those days.Even Gonubie is now longer safe because of esantini “township”. I guess those with fat wallets will move to Bankus Hill???

On a serious note, this is very scary, I can only imagine how that little girl feels now.
