Mystery midnight caller returns Peanut! (video)

Filed Under (animals, human interest) by Jan Hennop on 04-02-2010

Peanut the missing Meerkat has been found alive! His owner Wendy Johnson and police Inspector Kurt Schonknecht made a midnight dash to pick him up after getting a phonecall in a scene right out of a thriller movie, writes Michelle Solomon.

Johnson said she received the call just after midnight on Tuesday.

“If you want him, go to the Gonubie Boat Club,” a male voice told her.

“He’s in a box,” the voice added.

Johnson said she wasn’t sure if it was a hoax call, but went out anyway with Inspector Schonknecht, and found Peanut just were the caller said they would.

Peanut went missing from his enclosure at the Lion Park on Sunday and his owners Mark and Wendy Johnson offered a R5000 reward for his safe return.

So, how exactly did it happen? Read Thursday’s print or online edition of the Daily Dispatch.

On a serious note, we need a lot more Kurts in the police force. Being a police officer is more than just catcing the bad guys. Well done Kurt.
